food wasting in ISLAM

How much did we thrown our food?

According to FAO Study (Gutavsson et all, 2011), “One third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year, approximately 1.3 billion tonnes gets lost or wasted “. This volume can feed huge number of hunger people in the world (There were 925 million hungry people in 2010, around 13 per cent of world’s population, according to worldhunger ). This inevitably also means that huge amounts of the resources used in food production are used in vain, and that the greenhouse gas emissions caused by production of food that gets lost or wasted are also emissions in vain.

How Islamic said about excess food?

Islam is an entire way of life, and Allah’s Guidance extends into all areas of our lives. Islam has given detailed regulations even on environmental conservation.  Extravagance and waste in Islam are strongly discouraged. Here some guidances about that:
  • “[The Servants of Allah are] Those who, when they spend, are not extravagant and not stingy, but hold a just balance between those extremes” (Qur’an 25:67).
  • “O Children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer. Eat and drink, but waste not by excess, for Allah loves not the wasters” (Qur’an 7:31).

Further, Muslim people also recommend to eat as prophet’s way. The licking of the fingers is reported in  hadith  in Sahih Muslim by Ibn Abbas, Ibn Ba’b bin Malik and Abdullah bin Ka’b. “The merits of licking the fingers after taking the food and wipe the dish with the fingers and eating the fallen mouth ful of food after removing the dirt sticking to it “ . It’s not a weird act to do, if we remember The food we Waste, May another persons meal.
